The Point of no Return hike(#ponrhike), is a personal restorative journey centred around the historical events of the19th century. This experience carves out a broader history of the city of Lagos reaching back beyond the12th century and gives context for better understanding as a Nigerian, an African and human being.

This 360 immersive experience with the stunning backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, the golden sands of palm-fringed beaches anchored at the ends of Bonny camp, once the site of the largest barracoon on Lagos Island and Gberefu Island “point of no return” memorial.

It is a journey of two halves.
In the first half, with its amazing fusion cuisine and culture there are the hip hostels of popbeachclub, a luxurious introduction and chance to get warmed up for the journey to Ahijo. In the second half, we camp in tents and sample some incredible local food prepared by members of the local community using the freshest ingredients.

We have guaranteed security all through, local guides, translators, staff to care for your wellness, ferry tents and luggage including setting up campsites ahead during the tough second half. Marked by its natural beauty we experience a lifestyle that is somewhat unchanged since the 17-century living as guests of the community amongst simple village folks in rustic fishing hamlets camping on the ocean's edge.

The tour ends with a chance to explore the beautiful historic town of Badagry with its quaint charm heading back the next morning to Lagos as we travel across time on the majestic Owa river watershed, part of the Lagos estuary as we make our way to the CMS Marina jetty, Lagos Island site of a famous barracoon now occupied by a spectacular cathedral.

Why make the journey?

Historically in Africa land isn't property in the sense that it isn’t fungible, it belongs to the family. It is your identity. Being able to walk as a free man on such a difficult journey in such luxury with respect not only for the historical context but also the natural environment and the socio/economic experience is what this trip is about.

Restitution is not about land (restoration of property), but about the restoration of humanity. It is a restoration of the cultural and social relationship between the people and the land because you can never return to the place from which you were removed.

Dreaming of what restitution could be is imagining a future where we are reconnected with the landscape of our history and are able to place a visual reference to cultural, historical and social phenomena.

By understanding our historical connections with one another in the context of the challenges of the times and the economic and political forces at play in this theatre of war and peace.
